Wi-Fi 7 has stopped being a specification sheet feature and started turning up in ordinary UK homes, often without anyone asking for it. EE has bundled a Wi-Fi 7 router with its Full Fibre plans since December 2025. Toob launched a 2.3 Gbps package with one in April 2026. Hyperoptic and Community Fibre have been rolling out Wi-Fi 7 hardware through the year. There's a reasonable chance you already have one.

So: is it worth going out of your way for? Our answer, after fitting a lot of these, is a qualified yes—with a large caveat about what's actually slowing your WiFi down.

Where the UK Actually Is

The UK is ahead of most of Europe on adopting newer WiFi standards, which is unusual and mostly down to how quickly full fibre has rolled out. But zoom out and the picture is humbling: globally, Wi-Fi 6 accounts for around 27% of devices, while Wi-Fi 5 and the ancient Wi-Fi 4 still make up 39% and 34% respectively.

In other words, the average UK home is a mix. A recent phone or two that supports Wi-Fi 7, a laptop on Wi-Fi 6, a smart TV on Wi-Fi 5, and a handful of smart plugs and sensors quite happily running standards from a decade ago. That mix is the reality any new router has to serve.

What Wi-Fi 7 Genuinely Improves

Three things are real, and only one of them is speed.

Multi-Link Operation. This is the interesting one. A Wi-Fi 7 device can use more than one frequency band simultaneously rather than picking one and hoping. The practical result is fewer stalls and a steadier connection—better for video calls and gaming than for raw download figures.

Wider channels in the 6GHz band. Genuinely enormous throughput on paper. In practice, 6GHz is easily blocked by walls, so the range is short. It's superb in the same room and largely irrelevant two floors up.

Better behaviour when the network is busy. Wi-Fi 7 handles congestion more gracefully. In a house with forty connected devices—which is now normal rather than unusual—this matters more than peak speed ever will.

The Uncomfortable Truth About Your WiFi

Here's what we find on most callouts. The router is not the bottleneck.

The bottleneck is that the router lives in a cupboard by the front door because that's where the master socket is, and the house has solid brick internal walls, and there's foil-backed insulation in the extension, and somebody put the microwave next to it. No standard fixes any of that. Wi-Fi 7 in a bad location performs worse than Wi-Fi 5 in a good one.

We survey properties before quoting for exactly this reason—a signal map of the actual building tells you far more than a spec sheet does. Most of the time the answer isn't a faster router. When Wi-Fi 7 Is Worth Paying For

Buy it if:

  • You're replacing your router or mesh system anyway. The premium over Wi-Fi 6 is now small, and it buys you several more years of relevance.
  • You have a gigabit or faster full-fibre line and you're not getting close to it over wireless.
  • You have a busy household—multiple people streaming, working and gaming at once.
  • You want a mesh system and can't run cable between the nodes. This is the strongest case, and we'll come back to it.

Don't bother if:

  • Your current Wi-Fi 6 setup works fine. "Works fine" is a perfectly good reason to leave something alone.
  • Your broadband is 100–300 Mbps. Your line is the limit, not your WiFi.
  • Your actual problem is coverage. Spend the money on placement and access points instead.
  • Nothing you own supports Wi-Fi 7 and you're not planning to replace anything soon.

The Best Reason to Choose Wi-Fi 7: Mesh Backhaul

This is the case we make most often, and it's the one that rarely appears in reviews.

In a wireless mesh, the nodes have to talk to each other as well as to your devices. That link—the backhaul—is usually the weakest point in the whole system, which is why mesh performance falls off so sharply as you add nodes. Wi-Fi 7 mesh systems can dedicate their fastest radios to that link.

The result: the backhaul stops being the bottleneck, and every device benefits—including your old Wi-Fi 5 tablet, which doesn't know or care what standard the nodes use between themselves. If you can't run Ethernet between mesh points, this alone can justify the upgrade.

If you can run cable, do that instead. A wired backhaul beats any wireless one, at any standard, every time. That's the single biggest improvement we make on most network installations, and it's why we'd rather spend an hour running a cable than an hour arguing about routers.

What We'd Actually Recommend

Most Sussex homes: a decent Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 7 mesh system, properly positioned, with wired backhaul wherever a cable can reasonably be run. Placement and cabling deliver more real-world improvement than the standard on the box. Our mesh WiFi buying guide covers the specific systems we install.

Larger or awkward properties: proper ceiling-mounted access points on Ethernet. Less glamorous than a router with aerials, far better results, and it scales as you add rooms.

Gamers: a cable. We've written a whole piece on Ethernet vs WiFi for gaming, and the conclusion hasn't changed with Wi-Fi 7. Latency consistency is what matters, and nothing beats a wire.

The Honest Answer

Wi-Fi 7 is a sensible default when you're buying new and a poor reason to replace something that works. If your WiFi frustrates you today, the cause is almost certainly coverage, placement or a tired old router in a cupboard—not the generation of standard it supports.

Fix the physics first. Then buy the fast thing.
