We install mesh WiFi systems most weeks. After deploying dozens of different systems, we've settled on a few that consistently deliver. Here's what we recommend at each price point.

Best Budget: TP-Link Deco M4

Price: £90-120 for 3-pack
Ideal for: Flats, small houses, budget-conscious buyers

The Deco M4 is genuinely impressive for the price. WiFi 5, but unless you have gigabit broadband, you won't notice. Coverage is solid, the app is straightforward, and reliability has been excellent.

Limitations: no WiFi 6, ethernet backhaul requires a wired connection to each unit. But at this price, hard to complain.

Best Mid-Range: TP-Link Deco X50

Price: £200-250 for 3-pack
Ideal for: Most 3-4 bed houses, families with many devices

Our most-installed system. WiFi 6 support means it handles lots of devices well, the coverage is excellent, and the app has improved significantly. Good parental controls and QoS (prioritise specific devices).

We've had very few callbacks on these. They just work.

Best Premium: Ubiquiti UniFi

Price: £350-600 depending on configuration
Ideal for: Large houses, home offices, demanding users

This is what we use in our own homes and recommend for customers who need rock-solid reliability. UniFi is prosumer/commercial grade—it's what businesses use, scaled down for homes.

Advantages: incredible reliability, detailed management, expandable with access points, switches, and security gateways. Disadvantages: more complex setup, no built-in modem (you need your ISP router in modem mode or separate modem).

If you're technically confident or willing to pay for professional setup, UniFi is hard to beat.

Best for Simplicity: Amazon Eero Pro 6E

Price: £350-450 for 3-pack
Ideal for: Non-technical users who want premium performance

Eero's app is the best in the business—genuinely easy to use. Setup takes minutes. WiFi 6E support (the latest standard) provides excellent performance. Amazon backing means long-term support.

The main downside: if you don't have Amazon Prime, some features require a subscription (Eero+). And if you're privacy-conscious about Amazon, you might prefer alternatives.

What We've Stopped Recommending

Google Nest WiFi – Used to be good, but Google's updates have introduced bugs and the latest hardware hasn't impressed us. Given Google's history of abandoning products, we've moved away.

Netgear Orbi (older models) – Expensive and the app is frustrating. The newer Orbi models are better, but for the price, we'd choose Eero or UniFi.

How Many Units Do You Need?

  • Flat / 1-2 bed house: 1-2 units
  • 3 bed house: 2-3 units
  • 4-5 bed house: 3-4 units
  • Large / complex layouts: Survey needed

Thick walls (Victorian brick, stone) need more units. Open-plan modern homes need fewer.

Our Recommendations

Tight budget: TP-Link Deco M4. It's £100 well spent.

Most homes: TP-Link Deco X50 or Eero Pro 6E, depending on whether you want maximum compatibility or maximum simplicity.

Best possible performance / large homes: Ubiquiti UniFi, professionally installed.
