When WiFi keeps disconnecting, most people blame the router. Sometimes they are right. Often the real cause is more specific: one weak room, one overloaded mesh link, one old device, one broadband fault, or interference that appears at the same time every day.

The quickest way forward is to separate the internet connection from the wireless network. Those are not the same thing.

First Test: WiFi or Broadband?

Stand beside the router and run a speed test. Then test in the problem room. If possible, plug a laptop in with Ethernet and test again. If Ethernet stays stable while WiFi drops, the broadband is probably fine and the wireless design needs work.

If the wired test drops too, speak to the broadband provider or check the router logs. A better mesh kit will not fix a line fault.

Common Causes

Weak signal. Devices disconnect when signal gets marginal. Thick walls, distance and router placement are the usual culprits. Our WiFi dead spot guide covers this in detail.

Interference. Neighbouring networks, baby monitors, microwaves and crowded 2.4GHz channels can all cause brief dropouts.

Band steering problems. Routers push devices between 2.4GHz, 5GHz and sometimes 6GHz. Some devices handle that badly, especially older smart home kit.

Bad mesh placement. A mesh node needs a good signal back to the router. If it sits in the dead spot, everything connected to it will feel unreliable.

Device-specific faults. If only an iPhone, laptop or TV disconnects, update it, forget and rejoin the network, and check power-saving settings before replacing hardware.

What Actually Fixes It

  • Move the router out of cupboards and corners.
  • Split or tune bands where older devices struggle.
  • Use mesh nodes only where they still receive strong signal.
  • Wire access points or mesh backhaul where reliability matters.
  • Replace tired ISP routers that cannot handle the device count.
  • Use outdoor-rated access points for garden offices and cameras.

If the network supports work calls, CCTV, gaming or smart home devices, a home network installer can often solve the problem faster than another round of trial-and-error boxes.

The Honest Answer

WiFi dropouts are not random. They are signals from a network that is either poorly placed, overloaded, underpowered or being asked to do something wireless should not do alone. Diagnose first, then spend.
