AI Security Cameras: What's Real and What's Marketing
Every camera claims AI now. Only some of it is worth paying for—and one part of it is worth avoiding.

Every camera on the market is now an "AI camera". The term has been applied to so much that it has stopped carrying information, which is a shame, because underneath the marketing there has been one of the most useful changes in home security in years.
Here's our attempt to separate the two: what the AI in a modern camera genuinely does for you, what's padding, and what it means for your monthly bill and your legal position.
The Problem AI Actually Solves
Ask anyone who has lived with an older camera system what went wrong, and you'll hear the same answer. It wasn't image quality. It was that the thing wouldn't stop pinging.
Traditional motion detection worked on pixel change. A cat crosses the drive: alert. Headlights sweep the wall: alert. A branch moves, rain falls, a spider builds a web in front of the lens: alert, alert, alert. Within a fortnight the notifications are switched off, and a security system nobody looks at isn't a security system.
Modern cameras classify what they're seeing. Person, vehicle, animal, package. You choose which categories deserve your attention, and the rest is logged without waking your phone. That's not a marketing feature—it's the difference between a system that gets used and one that gets muted, and it's the single biggest improvement we've seen in domestic CCTV.
On-Device Processing: The Change That Matters
The bigger shift is where that thinking happens.
Early smart cameras uploaded clips to the manufacturer's servers, had them analysed there, and sent a notification back. That meant your footage left your house to be examined, it cost the manufacturer money for every camera every month, and there was a delay while it all happened.
Current cameras have enough processing power built in to do the analysis themselves. The consequences are all good:
- Faster alerts. Typically a second or two, rather than waiting on a round trip.
- Your footage stays home. Video isn't uploaded just to be classified.
- It still works when the internet doesn't. Detection and local recording continue during an outage.
- Fewer subscriptions. No per-camera cloud processing cost means less pressure to charge you monthly for it.

The Subscription Question
Worth doing the arithmetic before you buy, because it's rarely presented clearly.
A cloud plan at £8 a month is £96 a year. Over the five-to-seven-year life of a camera system that's £500–£700, frequently more than the hardware cost. Multiply by the number of cameras if the plan is priced per device, as many are.
The subscription-free alternative is a system that records locally—to an NVR or a hard drive on site—with the detection running on the cameras. Higher upfront cost, no recurring one, and you own the footage outright. It's what we specify on the majority of CCTV installations, and it's why our quotes sometimes look higher than a box from a shop until you add up seven years of fees.
Cloud storage isn't worthless. Off-site backup means footage survives if the recorder is stolen, which is a genuine scenario. Our usual answer is local recording as the primary system, with cloud backup for the two or three most important cameras if the customer wants it.
What's Still Mostly Marketing
"Predictive" or "pre-crime" detection. Claims that a camera can identify suspicious intent before anything happens. In domestic conditions—British weather, awkward angles, poor light—this is not reliable, and a system that cries wolf is worse than one that stays quiet.
Facial recognition. It works reasonably well in good light at close range. But it is the feature we most often talk customers out of, for legal reasons we'll come to.
Headline resolution figures. 4K on a camera with a small sensor and a cheap lens will give you a worse night-time image than a well-specified 1080p camera. At 2am in a Sussex driveway, low-light performance beats pixel count every time. Our camera buying guide goes into what to look at instead.
The Legal Bit: AI Doesn't Change the Rules
This trips people up, so it's worth being clear.
If your camera only captures your own property, it's domestic use and data protection law doesn't apply. The moment it captures a pavement, a shared drive, a public road or a neighbour's garden, you become a data controller under UK GDPR. That brings real obligations: a clear reason for filming, appropriate signage, capturing only what you need, secure storage, deleting footage when it's no longer needed, and responding to subject access requests within a month.
Adding AI doesn't soften any of that—and facial recognition raises the bar, because biometric data is treated as a special category with stricter requirements. For a home system, the security benefit of face recognition is marginal and the legal exposure isn't. We advise against it, and we'd rather spend the conversation on camera angles.
Angling cameras to cover your property rather than your neighbour's is free, solves most of this, and prevents the sort of dispute that outlasts the equipment. Our guide to CCTV rules and planning permission covers it properly.
What to Look For
If you're shopping, these are the questions that separate a good system from a well-marketed one:
- Does detection run on the camera or in the cloud? On-device is faster, more private, and keeps working in an outage.
- Which features need a subscription? Ask specifically. Some brands include detection but charge for the recordings it triggers.
- Can it record locally? To an NVR or a card, without a cloud account.
- How good is it at night? Look at sensor size and low-light samples, not the resolution on the box.
- Can you draw detection zones? Excluding the pavement cuts false alerts and keeps you the right side of the ICO.
- How long is it supported? UK law now requires manufacturers to state the minimum period a device will receive security updates. A camera out of support is a liability on your network.
The Honest Summary
The AI in modern cameras is worth having, but not for the reasons the packaging suggests. It won't stop a burglary. What it does is stop the flood of pointless notifications—and that means you'll still have alerts switched on in six months, which is when they matter.
Prioritise on-device processing, local recording and honest low-light performance. Skip facial recognition. And point the cameras at your own property.
